Serena Moves On

It looks like I picked the wrong Williams sister in my Aussie Open preview. Once again, Serena proved she is a big match player by serving huge and hanging in tough rallies to beat Elena Dementieva 6-3, 6-4. Time and again, I've marveled at how Serena just dials in and turns it up a notch, as she did down a set and 3-5 against Svetlana Kuznetsova the other day. Not only can she call on a deep resevoir of self-belief, when she hits her stride, her level rarely dips. As soon as she came back against Kuzy, I predicted she would win the tournament. I've seen her do it too many times, especially Down Under. Finals opponent Dinara Safina is playing the best tennis of her life, but unless Serena reverts back to some of her inconsistent play from the early rounds, I can't see how she won't hit doubles digits in majors. It's all on Serena's racket.

In the shameless plug category, here are my stories from the past few days on Roddick, Safina and Nadal. I also blogged a piece for tennis.com on the fallacy of retirements.

Also, Nadal ripped the new anti-doping whereabouts policy in his press conference yesterday. This story gives the details, and also quotes from my story in USA Today a few days ago. This is a topic that could pick up steam in the next few weeks.
